Top 7 Healthy Snacks For Work

Once upon a time, I used to work in advertising. For anyone else in the ad industry reading this, that first sentence is enough to paint a picture of what used to be my typical day: triple-booked meetings, non-stop emails and phone calls, eating at your desk and going home late only to reply to emails while lying on the couch, in bed and basically I might as well have glued the blackberry to my face.

So let’s just say I completely understand how not to make healthy snack choices during a busy workday. When you’re in a pinch, the easiest option is to turn to the vending machine or go to the coffee shop downstairs and return with a bagel or a muffin.

The only problem is, eating a bagel or a muffin gives you short-term energy followed by a sugar crash, fuelling even more cravings, feeling depleted and adding a bit more junk to the trunk. Plus, they simply have little to no nutritional value, making them poor choices when you need to bring your A-game to work. Processed junk food & refined carbs = bad brain food.

So here’s what I did while I was still working in advertising: I always made sure there was (healthy) food in my desk drawer. If that meant walking over to a supermarket nearby instead of to a Starbucks, I did it.

There were my top 7 healthy snacks:

  • Apples (desk) + almond butter (desk)
  • Neal Brothers Organic Blue Corn Tortillas (desk) + avocados (desk)
  • Mary’s Organic Crackers (desk) + Sunflower Kitchen Organic Hummus (fridge)
  • Homemade trail mix (desk)
  • Roasted chickpeas (desk)
  • Fresh berries (fridge) + organic, plain greek yogurt (fridge)
  • Dates (desk) + trail mix for when I wanted a sweet treat

Note: always aim to include protein, fat and fibre in your snack to feel full and keep your blood sugar levels balanced.

I found that having healthy snacks on hand was a small, but really effective and powerful habit. It made me feel more in control of my health, and had a positive ripple effect on other aspects of my day like my mood and energy levels. You and I both know that when you cave in and eat a handful of Twizzlers, you’ll simply regret it after and it can throw off your mood, productivity and derail your meals moving forward.

So the next time you step out for a 5-minute coffee run, try to turn the other direction and go buy some healthy snacks instead!

  1. I have no idea why, but any nut butter other than peanut butter (which I love) is more expensive. I love apples with peanut butter, but is almond butter a healthier option? Usually I try to include berries as well, eat them as they are or with greek yoghurt. Another great easy snack for my desk too!

    1. Hey Alisa!
      If you love peanut butter, always go for organic. Peanuts have an extremely high pesticide and toxin load (they’re very good at absorbing them in the soil!) Almond butter is definitely more nutritious and therefore healthier. Making your own is way cheaper too. I’ve included instructions here:
      And lastly, I find seed butters are cheapest like sunflower and pumpkin seed butter, so give those a shot too!
