Story of Bob

Imagine that you had a friend named Bob. You walked into Bob’s place one day and you saw piles of dirty laundry everywhere. And you were like “hey man, there’s dirty laundry everywhere”. And Bob would respond with, “yeah I know I never got around to learning how to do laundry properly. I’m just going to go buy some new clothes”. And you’d say, “dude…take 30 minutes of your life to read up on it or watch some YouTube videos. Stop wasting money on buying new clothes. It’s really not that bad.”

Then Bob would shrug and say he’s just not good at it, he tried it once plus he doesn’t have the time.

At this point you’d be slightly exasperated and say something like, “you don’t need to be good at it. You just need to learn how to clean your clothes, you’re an adult. It doesn’t take that much time either if you just do it alongside something else.”

Again, Bob would shrug and say, “yeah I guess…but I don’t really enjoy it”. And now you’d bang your head against a wall and say, “BRO. Bro. You don’t need to enjoy it. You just need to do it to be hygienic. You smell.”

And that concludes my made up story about Bob and his unwillingness to learn how to do laundry. Therein lies a message, or a sneaky analogy if you will, about many peoples’ unwillingness to learn how to cook. The most common excuses are: I don’t have time, I’m not good at it, I don’t like doing it.

It’s the equivalent to saying, I don’t have the time, don’t enjoy and am not good at brushing my teeth, doing laundry, tying my shoelaces, cleaning the house, or even driving. Throughout your life you didn’t question whether you needed to learn these skills or not. They were rites of passage, or mandatory life skills, and you made the time to learn how to do them. Remember the first time you tried to tie your shoelaces? You were all “mommy I don’t understand the bunny ears why are they bunny ears are these really bunnies please don’t make me do this can I just never wear shoes I hate shoes boo hoo” until you learnt it, and now you’re a pro and don’t think twice about it. It’s the same with cooking.

It boggles my mind how learning how to feed yourself has become something that is optional and not a mandatory life skill. Somewhere along the way with the rise of processed food, quick serve restaurants, and frozen dinners, coupled with the increasing media hype around specialty cooking shows and celebrities (e.g. Iron Chef, Cake Boss, Gordon Ramsay) we have created a culture that makes avoiding cooking easy, and approaching it terrifying (i.e. “wow look at how good they are, cooking is so complicated I’d never be able to do that”).

When you get down to the core of cooking, it’s all about putting some basic ingredients together to feed yourself. So that you don’t have to spend insane amounts of money on eating out all the time. So that you’re not clueless about what to eat when the restaurants close. So that you’re in control of what you put in your body, your health and your weight.

If you read this blog post and are feeling the slightest bit guilty about being like Bob…it’s okay. I used to be Bob too. But take that first step and find a YouTube video, browse through some recipes online and push outside your comfort zone to cook something that seems out of your reach, whether it’s a fancy omelet or a pot roast. Just don’t be Bob. Don’t be smelly.
