Raw Chocolate Milk

Up until a few years ago, I thought that sipping on chocolate milk was a healthy choice…well, healthy enough. And why wouldn’t I? Like any other person, I’d been told the following:

  • Dairy was good for me, especially my bones.
  • Large gym chains had posters of chocolate milk plastered on the walls saying it was “the perfect post-workout fuel”. Heck if a gym was promoting it, it must be good.
  • Parents gave it to kids all the time to take to school as a healthy alternative to soda.

Now if you have a sneaking suspicion I’m about to burst your bubble, I am 🙂

  • Pasteurized dairy is highly inflammatory, acne-forming and causes indigestion, gas and bloating. *Pop*
  • Did you know a small carton or serving of chocolate milk contains contains 26g of sugar? To paint an accurate picture of just how much sugar that is, it’s the same as half a bag of Skittles. Or slightly more than the 22g of sugar found in a Kit Kat bar. *Pop*

By now, you might be crying and shaking in the corner of your room because you don’t want to give up chocolate milk. And that’s okay, because chocolate milk is awesome. But there IS a simple alternative to make at home, which hits the spot and conquers the craving. Take my hand and crawl out of the corner now?

Here’s the deal: you can make this in a shaker cup or a blender, and all you need is three ingredients. Feel free to play around with the recipe by adjusting quantity, using your nut milk of choice, or adding in a pinch of flavour using ground cinnamon or vanilla. This is what works for me!

Raw Chocolate Milk
Serves: 1

  • 1 tsp. raw cacao powder
  • 1 cup almond milk (or other nut milk of choice e.g. cashew, brazil nut)
  • 1 tsp. 100% pure maple syrup, or to taste

  • Blend all three ingredients together in a blender.
  • Note: homemade nut milk will always taste better, but if you’re short on time the boxed stuff works!
