Ask Alina: What Do You Eat On A Daily Basis?

Q: Hi Alina, I was wondering what you eat everyday? Can you walk me through your breakfast, lunch and dinner? – Hiba K.

A: It’s funny, I get asked that question quite a lot and it’s really nothing that spectacular. I think a lot of people expect me to answer with something like, “a big kale salad for lunch” or, “cauliflower pizza” for dinner. While yes, I do eat those things on occasion, it’s pretty rare.

The way I can get myself to eat healthy is by keeping it as simple as possible. For example, right now I have the same breakfast every, single day. A quarter cup organic rolled oats cooked either in 1/2 cup almond or coconut milk, with nut and seed mix (flax, chia, pumpkin, sunflower + whatever other nut is at home), some fruit (usually chopped apples), cinnamon and then a small dollop of nut butter to make the oats creamier. And no, I don’t add any sweetener. Oats are pretty carb heavy as it is!

For lunch and dinner, I either eat:

  1. A Pakistani dish (l’ll take any Pakistani recipe and just make sure I use ghee instead of vegetable oil, cut back on the oil requirements and minimize any frying) alongside a small portion of rice or chapati, plus some salad.
  2. Baked or pan-fried seasoned protein (e.g. fish, chicken, eggs, shrimp), with just a big salad, or salad and rice.

10-15% of the time I’ll eat out and it can range between a superfood salad to sushi to a big juicy burger.. I don’t restrict myself, I just try to make sure I eat healthy 80-90% of the time and that it’s home cooked as much as possible!

My daily beverages are water and green tea. I’ll have the occasional black tea, smoothie, juice or lassi. No fruit juice, no soda, no coffee, no alcohol.

As for snacks, it’s mostly hummus, nuts, eggs and fruit. When it comes to treats, I try to stick to dark chocolate but err, sometimes those soft spongey yellow cupcakes call out to me or a mini donut. And I just have it (gasp!) I don’t keep any junk food/processed food/treats at home because if it’s within reach…it will find its way into my stomach.
