Ask Alina: Should I Buy A Juicer or a Blender? September 19, 2018 Sep 19 2018 Q: I want to start making green juices at home but I’m wondering if it’s necessary to invest in a juicer…or can I use a blender? – Melissa, R. A: Great question! First, let’s discuss the difference between a juice and a smoothie. A smoothie can be made in a blender and involves blending or pureeing the whole fruit or vegetable. There is no waste, and all the fibre from produce is used. Fibre is great for slowing down the release of natural sugar into the bloodstream (therefore better for blood sugar balance and weight loss), and is also helpful for digestion. Juice on the other hand, strips away all of the fibre since the pulp and skin is removed. But, it’s much easier to drink since it has the consistency of water, or well, juice! It also provides a much quicker hit of vitamins and minerals; this can be easier to digest and absorb, especially if you have weak digestion. What I don’t like about juice is that a lot of (beneficial) fibre is wasted and it can also upset blood sugar balance. So, as you can probably tell, I vote smoothie (blender) over juice (using a juicer). That being said, if you want to make fresh juice and don’t want to spend on a juicer, then yes by all means you can stick to using only a blender. You’ll just have to use a nutmilk bag, strainer or cheesecloth to strain out the pulp. It’s a little bit more work, but honestly it takes a few extra minutes and you’ll save yourself some storage space in the kitchen and some money! A final note: If you don’t have either a blender or juicer yet, I’d recommend investing in a blender since you can make so much more with it (soups, salad dressings, sauces…) as opposed to a juicer!
