Ask Alina: How Else Can I Use Flax Seeds?

Q: So, I know that flax seeds are healthy but I’m not sure how to actually use them side from adding them into a smoothie. Any other recommendations? – Zahra K.

A: Yes, lots of recommendations! What I love about flax seeds is how affordable they are, and the fact that they have a very mild, nutty flavour that can build on top of other flavours, without becoming overpowering.

Before I dive into some recommendations, I just want to point something out for everyone reading this: try to use ground flax seeds in order to receive more of the nutrients, such as the anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fats inside.

That doesn’t mean you can’t buy whole flax seeds – certainly buy them or use them whole if you wish, but try as much as possible to grind them in a coffee or spice grinder before each use.

Finally, make sure that ground flax seeds are stored in the fridge! This is because the Omega 3 fats inside are quite delicate, and sensitive to light and heat. If you keep them on the counter, they will go rancid over time and have the opposite affect on your health.

Okay, onto the recommendations!

How to use flax seeds
  1. Add 1 Tbsp into your morning smoothie
  2. Sprinkle as much as you’d like onto your morning oatmeal
  3. Add 1-2 tsp into a soup recipe
  4. Use them in a homemade granola bar recipe
  5. Add them into a muffin recipe
  6. Use them as an egg replacement (if you’re vegan or allergic). To replace one egg, simply take 1 Tbsp of ground flax seeds, mix it with 3 Tbsp of warm water, and let it sit for 10 minutes. It should form into a gel and then be ready to use!
  7. Use them in a salad dressing recipe
  8. Sprinkle whole seeds onto a salad for extra crunch
  9. Use them in a grain-free bread recipe
  10. Use them as a laxative – add 1 Tbsp to 1/2 cup of warm water and drink it before bedtime
  11. Use them in a face mask recipe
