So…what if you don’t like to cook? January 11, 2016 Jan 11 2016 Most people assume that if you’re a nutritionist, you love to cook. And sure, many nutritionists do and I like doing so on occasion, typically the weekends. But on most days and especially during the week, I’d really rather not cook after a long day and would prefer to have food handed to me instead. While it can get tempting to pick up a shawarma plate or Indian takeout on the way home, 90% of the time I opt to make a meal at home (or eat what’s in the fridge if I’ve prepped ahead of time), knowing it’ll be better for my health and my wallet. It hasn’t been easy to get into this habit, especially when it can feel like a drag or chore on top of our already busy lives, but there’s ways to make it feel far more enjoyable. Below are the top four ways! Play musicWhether you want to dance to Top 40s or listen to some gangsta rap, music changes the whole feel and tone of the cooking experience. For example, I like to find Parisian playlists online while I cook. All of a sudden the mundane act of chopping a tomato turns into a beautiful work of art and I feel like Julia Child waltzing around the kitchen. But hey, that’s just me. Listen to a podcast or audiobookSometimes I can feel like I’m wasting time if I’m not learning anything new or doing anything that feels productive. Which is why I love listening to audiobooks or podcasts while I’m cooking. It can make time fly by and I feel like I’ve killed two birds with one stone – fed my brain and my body – boo ya! Cook with your partnerWhile this idea typically depends on the willingness of your partner, remember that they can also be coerced into submission 🙂 Luckily for me, I have a spouse who’s naturally a better cook than I am and loves the idea of cooking together. (Thank you God, I must have done something right in life).I’ve found that when you’re in it together with someone else, the whole process of cooking becomes faster, easier and more fun. My husband and I typically meal prep together on Sundays and make a few meals for the week, using it as quality time to catch up, have a dance off and throw veggie scraps at each other. Use it as meditationIf I’ve got this right, meditation is just meant to be time spent switching off and not thinking about anything, aside from focusing on the present moment and giving it your fullest attention. That’s why I don’t think meditation has to be sitting down with incense and candles around you (although that is also pretty fun, I’ve tried it), meditation can be a walk, cooking or even cleaning up at home. If you have a lot of thoughts running through your mind (because who doesn’t these days?) use this time to switch off and reboot. Give all of these a go, hopefully at least one or two of them should stick and then you’ll realize cooking isn’t so bad after all 🙂 If there’s any other ideas that you have or use in the kitchen, feel free to post them below!
