Matcha Green Tea Latte January 4, 2016 Jan 04 2016 Unable to function without coffee in the morning? If the answer is a resounding “yes, if I could I’d marry the Starbucks mermaid”, then this is the blog post for you. If you’ve read some of my posts on coffee before, you’ll know I’m a huge advocate for kicking the caffeine addiction. Of course, a cup of good quality coffee on occasion never hurt anyone, but turning into a braindead zombie without it or having upwards of 3 cups/day is a signal that your health is being compromised. Enter green matcha tea lattes. They’re the perfect “in-between” drink to help you wean off of coffee. They have a small amount of caffeine (35mg per cup) with a balance of the amino acid L-theanine to offset any jitters and make you feel calm and lower anxiety. So what exactly is matcha green tea? Is it similar to green tea? Here are the key differences: Matcha green tea comes in a bright green powdered form, whereas green tea comes in loose leaf form or in teabags Matcha green tea and green tea come from the same plant Matcha green tea is a powdered form of the entire whole leaf, whereas we throw away or strain the leaves when consuming regular green tea. Matcha leaves are never heated and undergo less processing, whereas green tea leaves are dried under the sun an undergo more processing The result? Less processing, less heat and consuming the entire leaf leads to more nutritional value. In fact, 1 cup of matcha green tea is the nutritional equivalent to 10 cups of regular green tea. That means the following benefits of green tea are amplified: High source of antioxidants (prevent disease, boost immunity, anti-aging) Clear skin Energizing Anti-inflammatory Boost metabolism Boost concentration and focus Lower anxiety So…ready to ditch the mermaid yet? Perhaps the best way is to start distancing yourself from her. You know, act aloof and distant and don’t visit her as often 😉 Where do I buy it? You can find this at any health food store or tea shop. (I use this one by Organic Traditions), but there are cheaper options available and even single servings to get started. I would also recommend trying this out on a weekend first, and once you get the hang of it it takes less than five minutes to make in the morning during the week. P.S. If you’re getting a matcha green tea latte at a coffee shop, make sure to ask if they use fresh powder or syrup. Pretty much all big chains will use flavoured syrup to cut costs (shocking right?), so you’ll just be getting a hit of sugar and none of the nutritional benefits. The independent/hipster type cafes tend to use good quality powder 🙂 Matcha Green Tea Latte Serves 1 Ingredients: 1 cup non-dairy milk e.g. almond, cashew 1 Tbsp. organic extra-virgin coconut oil 1/2 tsp. matcha green tea powder 1/2-1 tsp vanilla extract Sweetener, to taste e.g. raw honey, stevia Instructions: Bring 1 cup non-dairy milk to a boil in saucepan Add 1/2 tsp. of matcha green tea powder to the milk Ideally, use a matcha tea whisk (if you don’t have one like me, don’t sweat it and use a regular whisk, works just fine) and whisk the mixture. It should become smooth and frothy. Add in remaining ingredients and stir Pour into cup and enjoy!
