How to do a (realistic) spring cleanse!

You know it’s spring when a) you wake up to birds chirping outside like a Disney movie, b) you see overly eager people wearing shorts and flip-flops (guys, we’re not quite there yet), and c) you’re suddenly being bombarded with messages of doing a “spring detox” or “spring cleanse” everyday”.

Here’s the deal: your body is detoxing and cleansing on a regular basis (don’t let any marketer tell you otherwise), through the inexpensive methods of breathing, urinating, pooping, and sweating thanks to our lungs, kidneys, colon, skin and the most amazing detox product on the market available right now for $0.00: the liver.

So what does that mean?  It means you don’t have to do a drastic or extreme detox to “rid your body of all its toxins”. It also means you can support the natural process on an ongoing basis by helping those organs do their job well. For example, if you provide your liver with the nutrients, nourishing tonics/herbs and TLC that it deserves, you will be the king or queen of detoxing.

Am I saying “detox” products in stores aren’t real? Here’s my take on them: My issue with detox products mostly comes down to their marketing and the promises that they make. For example, most detox teas are just glorified laxatives. Of course you’ll drop 5 pounds if you’re pooping all day! When it comes to juice cleanses, the only reason you’re losing a lot of weight is because you’re not eating, not because you’re “detoxing”. And no 7-day cleanse or detox is going to undo years of damage through bad lifestyle, eating habits or environmental exposure. Sure, it can help give you a kickstart and might make you feel better for a few days.

But there are just no quick fixes. That being said, there are certain products on the market that are very helpful. And they are helpful because they respect and support the body’s natural process of detoxification, by lending a hand to our organs. For example, drinking dandelion root tea on a daily basis supports detoxification by stimulating bile function which helps absorb and break down fats, and eliminate waste products from the body. Another example is taking supplemental fibre on a daily basis to help push more waste out of the body and prevent constipation.

If you’re wondering what to do next…try out the guidelines below for 3 weeks and I guarantee it will make you feel just as amazing as any detox product on the market:

Diet:

  • Eat real food that is made from scratch
  • Make sure half your plate is full of vegetables
  • Avoid processed, junk food
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Remove dairy, sugar and gluten from your diet
  • Drink 2-3L of water per day

Lifestyle:

  • Work up a sweat 2-3 times per week
  • Walk outside in nature for 30 minutes per day
  • Minimize screen time (no screens 1 hour upon waking or before sleeping)
  • Sleep 7-9 hours daily

Supplements:

  • Take supplemental fibre daily e.g. FibreSmart
  • Drink 2-3 cups of herbal tea daily to promote liver health e.g. Dandelion Root, Peppermint, Chicory Root (found in coffee substitutes)
  • Take supplemental milk thistle, or a more comprehensive liver support formula
  • Take a probiotic to keep your digestion regular

If this feels overwhelming, simply pick 1-2 guidelines from each section and work on that for 3 weeks! You’re still bound to feel the benefits. And if you don’t know where to start with making food from scratch, my free eBook, “The Beginner’s Guide To Meal Prep” will be sure to come in handy!
